Korg DS-8

I just picked this one up a few days ago and haven’t had a chance to get too in depth with it.  Anyway, this is a 4-operator FM synth, Korg’s 1980’s answer to the Yamaha DX line and Roland’s D50.  So, digital to the core, basically.  I grabbed this one because it was fairly cheap and I’ve been curious about the whole FM synthesis thing for some time now and this seemed like as good a time as any to give it a shot.

I will be updating here after I’ve had a chance to learn my way around it a little bit.  But my first impression is that is sounds pretty good!  Just flipping through the previous owner’s presets, there was an emulation of the “Soundtrack” patch from the JX-8P and an attempt at a JX-10 string sound.  Then there were more pads and basses along with dozens of the usual bells, guitars, various perc sounds, etc. but, nonetheless, I can tell that this thing will make nice pad sounds for me once I learn how to program it a little better.  Until then…
